People frequently ask me where I find all the different colored bags for recycled bag projects. I admit it is harder to find pretty colors of plastic bags to turn into yarn or plarn as it is referred to now. Plarn is the plastic yarn made by cutting recycled plastic into strips. One tip I want to share today is that you must be creative finding colorful plastic to recycle into plarn.
One such example is this large red plastic bag that hash browns are sold in.
It is mostly a nice bright red color and can be cut into a thin strip to make plarn. Because this plastic is very thick, I cut it in one long continuous strip about 1/2 inch wide. In the photo below, I show how I start the cutting of the bag.
Just continue cutting the bag around and around, making one long strip of plastic yarn that can be crafted with. This plastic bag resulted in 26 yards of plarn. While that may not seem like very much material, it is enough to add a stripe or two to a recycled bag project.
Here is another example of plastic you can use for making plastic yarn, it is a large plastic package that toilet paper came in.
Again cut the plastic into a long strip and wind it up into a plarn ball for crafting. This packaging netted 45 yarns of plarn cut 1 inch wide.
So be creative and look around at the different sources of colorful plastic you may have that you hadn’t consider making into plarn. Ask your friends and family to save any plastic packaging that contains bright colors you need to spice up your recycled bag projects. Think outside the box and you may discover some wonderful colored plastics that you can use for your recycled crafting.
