Plarn Laundry Basket In Progress

I don’t normally share a project in progress but this crocheted laundry basket is just such an enormous project that I have to post about it even though it’s not completed yet. I’m guessing its about half finished and I believe I’ve used already over a hundred recycled plastic bags.

I have had a recycled plastic bag or plarn laundry basket on my to-do list for a long time. I eventually get around to creating most of the things on my list but it does take time. Speaking of which, this recycled bag may end up being the largest one I have ever crocheted and it’s taking a lot of time.

Here is a picture I took of the base which is about 15 inches wide. It was done in single crochet stitch so it would be tighter and stronger for the bottom of the laundry basket. I am crocheting the sides in half-double crochet stitches.

I am continuing to crochet on this project and hope to have it finished soon. Once done, I will post the free crochet pattern and more pictures here at My Recycled Bags.

  1. I absolutely love this. I saw a lady who had crocheted flip flops from plarn. I am desperatly seeking that pattern, if you have any suggestions they would be happily welcomed. Thanks for the new project idea with laundry basket, cant wait to see finished.

  2. Hello! I am from Zagreb (Croatia). I am crocheting since I was 11 or 12 but not constantly. Just recently I discovered plarn and I like it very much. I like Your blog and perhaps I will following, looking forward pattern of this lovely plarn laundry basket and all other lovely patterns.
    See you soon on blog,
    Regards,
    Irena

  3. @Judy — It does take a while before it turns up. It will begin to curl up at about 17 inches wide and then as you continue to work the pattern you will see that it’s more of a bowl. Once its finished and you gather the handles together, it works well for carry clothes because of the wide base.

  4. Thanks for the info. I am at 23″ now, but will keep going. If doesn’t turn, will try modifying by a row of dbc chain 1 and making a drawstring bag. Then put the carry handle above that. I just became aware of this last month and I’m hooked. Made several smaller bags using your idea and they came out great. THANKS

  5. Just found your site today. So many good ideas. So little time.
I too am a big C survivor. My last bout was seven years ago so doing good. Had to comment on your plarn laundry basket. I’m so cheap I’ve been using old cardboard boxes. Now I can have pretty ones. Thanks so much for all your wonderful ideas. Marge

  6. Good morning … love the whole plarn crocheting … how do you get the bottom to stay flat? … mine always have “ripples” … am leaving for work but will check in later this evening … love all the ideas … smile … Louise

  7. @Lousie – For this project the bottom may ripple but it doesn’t really matter as you are using it for a tote bag. On some of my rugs, I know rippling can be an issue. I have used gentle heat from a blow dryer to flatten a rug. Hope this project works out for you.

  8. Cindy … what a great idea! … never thought of using a blow dryer … thanks for the tip! … smiles
