Real Deal Brazil Recycled Bag

I recently received this cool tote bag from Robert over at Real Deal Brazil . The Real Deal Brazil have been making hats in Brazil that are crafted from recycled tarps of Brazilian cargo trucks in an attempt to cut down on the wasting of resources.

They shipped this sample recycled tote bag for my review. They wanted my opinion on the product as they are apparently going to start making them from the old tarps along with the hats. Because they graciously sent me their product without charge, I agreed to provide a complimentary review of their new recycled product.

Upon inspection, I found the bag measures 12-1/2″ wide by 12″ long and a side depth of 4″ with 24″ straps. The bag has been nicely constructed with the outer portion from old recycled tarps. Pieces of tarp have been cleverly added to the front to embellish it along with a 9″ by 7″ outer pocket. The inside is especially attractive with a pretty bronze fabric lining that nicely compliments the bag. A roomy 6″ by 6″ zippered pocket along with a handy cell phone pouch are included inside the bag. A magnetic closure secures the tote bag closed.

My only concern when I first received the bag was that the tarp material had a bit of an old tarp odor to it. Real Deal Brazil said they would check into eliminating the smell. I must say though after several weeks that this bag has been sitting in my house, there is no odor or smell remaining at all.

Recycled Baby Bib

Here is another item that I have wanted to make out of plastic bag yarn. It’s a crocheted baby bib made using recycled plastic bags and cotton yarn. I added the cotton to give the bib some absorbency. You can just wipe it clean or machine wash as needed. Line dry only! If you put it in the dryer, the plastic will melt.

The bib has a small Velcro closure on the top for easy on and off. I cut just a small square from a long strip of Velcro that I had. It’s about 3/4 of an inch wide and is machine stitched to the back side of strap. I used white plastic bags and some leftover blue variegated cotton yarn for this project. But you can probably use just about any color combination you desired to create your bib. I finished off my bib by working Sc stitches all around the outside edge and neck opening using just the cotton yarn.
This gives the bib a nice smooth finished edge.

Recycled Cassette Tape Granny Square Bag

Cassette Tape Granny Square Motif Bag

This week’s bag is a recycled little purse crocheted from plastic tan grocery bags and brown cassette tapes. This was an interesting and challenging project. Unfortunately I found out that cassette tapes come in several shades of browns after I was halfway done with my bag. I finally had to make my bag much smaller than I had planned. I couldn’t find the same shade of brown cassette tape that I started the project with so my purse became the little bag you see in this post. The strap measures about 37 inches untied. I tied it in a knot at the top to create a shorter strap. Variations of this bag can be made using all plastic bags or any other recycled materials that you may want to substitute. The overall size can be increased by adding additional rounds as desired. Have fun with this week’s bag and enjoy your recycling and crafting project.
