Mini Plarn Flower Basket

I needed a little mini flower basket for a garden theme crochet project so I cut some plastic bags very thin to accomplish this tiny recycled plastic basket. The basket is filled with wild Yarrow and Lupine flowers.

I used 2 recycled plastic bags and cut them in long continuous strips just a 1/4 of an inch wide. Here is one bag cut just 1/4 inch wide and rolled into a little plarn ball. As you can see this is thin, single strand plarn. I joined strips with a small knot and then just crocheted over the ends on the inside of the basket to hide the splices.

Vintage Red Plastic Water Bottle Holder

I was so excited to receive these unique vintage red newspaper bags from an on-line friend Judy. She saved them from her delivery of a newspaper and mailed them to me. I cut about 30 bags into 1 inch wide strips using this newspaper plarn-making tutorial for the narrow bags.

Here is a photo of one of the long narrow newspaper sacks I recycled into yarn aka plarn.

Easter Plarn Projects

Easter is just about upon us and what better time to share some recycled plastic bag or plarn projects.
Here is a cute Easter basket you can crochet using some recycled green, yellow and white plastic bags.

Here is a larger basket that I crocheted several years ago with some hard-to-find purple plastic sacks. An on-line friend sent me these purple retail sacks and I happily recycled them into plarn. I cut the bags 1 inch wide and crocheted the basket using this free Easter basket pattern.

Plarn Star Christmas Ornaments

Crafting with recycled materials is always a rewarding venture for me. It is truly taking trash or otherwise useless material and creating something new. The new item can be a work of art that is pleasing to see or repurposed into something useful. In this case of recycling plastic bags, I have crocheted some Christmas ornaments that I affectionately call my plarn star Christmas ornaments.

Below I have two different sets of Christmas stars, one is crocheted with recycled plastic bags or plarn and then the other matching one is done in acrylic yarn. The granny stitch stars are both made using the exact same pattern that can be found here

Peppermint Scrubbies

I love doing some Christmas in July projects. Here are some quick and cute peppermint scrubbies you can crochet that make wonderful little Christmas gift ideas. Of course I had to make some using recycled plastic bags.

Here is a crocheted scrubbie with a green plarn center made from a thin cut plastic bag. I used one green plastic bag cut 1/4 inch wide to make the center and used cotton to finish it. Just follow the pattern directions but use the thin cut plarn for the center portion of the pot scrubber.

Here is one more group of peppermint scrubbies I crocheted using different bits of cotton scrap yarn.
