Plarn Christmas Stocking
Here is the long awaited Christmas stocking made from recycled plastic bags or plarn. People have been asking for a Christmas stocking pattern to crochet using recycled plastic bags for the last several Christmas seasons. So I finally tackled the project and finished up the eco-friendly stocking as shown in the picture.

Below you will find the free crochet pattern for my recycled Christmas stocking. I hope you enjoy the pattern and Merry Christmas!

Description: Plastic Bag Plarn Christmas Stocking
Stocking measures 7 inches wide and 18 inches long with a 2 inch hanging loop

Directions:
Rnd 1
With plastic bag yarn (plarn) Ch 39, Sl St to join in first st of chain to form ring.

Rnd 2
Ch 2, work Hdc in each st around to beg Ch 1. Join with Sl St to beg Ch 1.

Rnd 3 – 23
Hdc in each st around, do NOT join but just continue working Hdc around which creates a seamless stocking until stocking measures 10 inches long. FO.

Heel
Row 1
Holding plarn and red yarn together, attach with Sl St into the stocking, Ch 1, Hdc in ea of the following 11 sts. (12 sts with Ch 1 counting as first st.)

Row 2
Ch 1, turn, Hdc in ea st across. (12 sts)

Row 3 – 7
Ch 1, turn, work one Hdc dec over the next 2 Hdc sts, then Hdc in ea st down to the last 2 sts of row. Work one Hdc dec over the last 2 sts. (Hdc decrease is done by working just one Hdc over two sts.)

Repeat until just 4 sts remain.

Row 8
Ch 1, turn, Hdc in ea st. (4 sts with Ch 1)

Row 9
Ch 1, turn, work 2 Hdc in 1st st, Hdc in ea st down to last st. Work 2 Hdc in last st.

Repeat Row 9 until you have 12 sts again.

Foot
Rnd 1
Using just plarn and with RS facing, attach at corner of heel where the two ends meet.(See photo above.) Hdc in ea st of heel, around stocking leg and around other side’s heel. Ending back at beginning heel corner.
Continue working in rnds on foot without joining.

Rnd 2
Work one Hdc dec over the next 2 Hdc sts, then work one more Hdc dec over the next 2 sts again. (2 decs made). Then Hdc in ea st down to the last four sts of rnd, work one Hdc dec over the next 2 Hdc sts, then work one more Hdc dec over the next 2 sts again.

Row 3
Hdc in ea st around foot until it measures 5 inches long. End at bottom where heel side is and then Sl St in next st for a smooth edge finish.

Tip: If necessary add a st(s) at heel where it attaches to stocking to help with the shape of your stocking. I had to add one st at Row 5 at heel where it attached to stocking to help with the shaping. Remember crafting with recycled materials is always a work in progress so adjust your stitches as needed to create your unique item.

As stated above, repeat Row 3 until you have 5″ long foot.

Toe
Add red yarn to where the plarn is still attached from the end of your foot. Work one Hdc dec over the next 2 Hdc sts, Hdc in ea st around to other side edge. Work one Hdc dec over the next 2 Hdc sts to match decrease from the other side, then Hdc in ea remaining st of rnd.

Next Rnds
Work 3 Dec’s evenly around each round until only 8 sts are left. Leave long yarn tail for closing the end of the toe. Weave or Sl St close the toe. FO.
Using red yarn and smaller H hook, stitch closed the heel joints.

Trim and Loop Holder
At upper left edge, attach red yarn, Sc around evenly around top edge of stocking and join with Sl St to beg. Ch 18 and join back into same st as the base of Ch 18 for loop holder. Weave under ends around loop base to secure loop holder to stocking. FO.
