Crochet a Spiral Scrubbie

Spiral Scrubbies I recently saw this cute spiral scrubbie and just had to try the pattern. It has such a unique look and I could just picture adding some recycled plastic netting to the design for added scrubbing power. The green and red scrubbie is crocheted with recycled lettuce sleeves cut into strips. You then just crochet with your yarn and the netting held together. Here is my square scrubber tutorial that I made using the netting and it has pictures how to cut the lettuce netting so you can crochet with it. In this spiral pattern I worked two rounds with the netting and then two rounds without. I used cotton yarn but worst yarn works fine too. As shown, the other scrubbie is worked all in cotton according to the free pattern that Judith has here.

Ham Scrubbie Here is another scrubbie I crocheted using one of those plastic nets that they put around a ham. The ham netting is much thicker and harder to crochet with. I had to cut the ham netting into wider strips of about 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide otherwise I couldn’t connect the cut links. The lettuce sleeves are much softer and easier to crochet with. But the ham netting does make for a very good and stiff scrubber. I crocheted only three times the 2-row sets using the gold colored ham netting to complete this scrubbie.

Anyway I just wanted to share this fun spiral scrubbie pattern and show how by adding a bit of recycled material, you could create a very handy scrubber. Enjoy this green craft idea!

  1. I visited a site called LayZgreenPeople.com It is like the MySpace or facebook of the green movement. It is great. You can keep up to date on all sorts of things. Learn what steps you can take to help the environment.

  3. I can’t seem to find the pattern for the yellow and green spiral scribbie. Could you please show me where to find the pattern. I just love them.

    Thanks,
    Dani

  4. I’m intrigued by this as I have some potato netting bag lying around. Is that the same as the lettuce ones do you think?

Also, which rounds/rows did you crochet the netting into?

Thanks for this post and I’ve enjoyed visiting your site. I’ve been thinking of trying plarn too, but would like to spin it first. Ever done that?

    Cheers for now. 🙂

  5. Dana,
You could use your potato netting and you may want to do every other row as its probably stiffer than the lettuce nets. I used a ham net once and it was really thick hard plastic but it made the best spiral scrubbie. I only did 2 rows with the netting as it was so stiff and difficult to crochet with. Email me back if you have any other questions on crocheting scrubbies.

As for spinning plarn, I have used my homemade Navajo spinner to spin some plarn.I know many people that have ply’d and spun plarn and just loved the results.

  6. Our lettuce doesn’t come in netting. It’s wrapped in plastic. I live in Texas. I think our lettuce comes from Mexico.

  7. @Sasha — The local produce grocer uses these to package the lettuce. It maybe a local practice as I have seen the plastic wrap method in places like Walmart. I have many of these nets if you should need some. Just send me a message as I just love to share recycled materials with others.
